Parliament receives Zuma’s resignation letter

Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete has on Thursday, February 15, got a letter from President Jacob Zuma.

The letter informed her of his resignation as the President of the Republic of South Africa.

The President resigned with immediate effect.

It will be published in the Parliamentary Announcements Tabling and Committees (ATC) diary, for the consideration of Members of Parliament.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng informed Mbete of his availability to preside over the National Assembly’s election of the new President this evening [Thursday], February 15.

Election of the President, planned for Friday, 16 February 16, 2018, will be today [Thursday] at 14.00.

This progression plan of the present sitting of the National Assembly from considering a proposed Motion of No Confidence in the President, to that of electing a President.

Mbete thanks, President Zuma for his service for the people of South Africa over the most recent eight years and wishes him well.
