The Lucky Specials Film exclusive broadcast

The Lucky Specials is a feature-length edutainment film, directed by Rea Rangaka, which is set in a mining town in Southern Africa, where rock dust and cramped quarters expose workers to various risks such as HIV and Tuberculosis.

It follows the lives of members of a small-time cover band dreaming of making it big in the music industry. When tragedy strikes, the band must find the strength to make their dreams become a reality.

The Lucky Specials combines the best of fiction and non-fiction storytelling to demystify tuberculosis (TB), explaining how it spreads and how it can be treated.

The movie cast list includes some well-known television personalities such as Oros Mampofu (Mandla); Thomas Gumede (Sello); Linda Sebezo (Aunt Nomaliso Mdluli-Tlou); Blondie Makhene (Bra Easy); Sivenathi Mabuya (Nkanyiso); Fulu Mugovhani (Zwanga); and Richard Lukunku (Jose).

The Lucky Specials will represent more than just entertainment to millions of television viewers, as it shares critical lifesaving information by raising awareness to the effect that it’s possible to overcome diseases such as tuberculosis.

“We are excited at this collaborative effort between SABC 1 ‘Mzansi’s official storyteller’ and the creators of “The Lucky Specials” – a film that tells an authentic Mzansi story that aims to inspire, educate, motivate and entertain our youthful audiences.”  said SABC 1 head of Channel Comments Clara Nzima.

“Media, particularly film, has immense power to entertain, to express emotions and to inform individuals in a way that nothing else can,” said Aric Noboa, president of Discovery Learning Alliance and producer of “The Lucky Specials.” “This film has it all: a new genre of music created specifically for the movie, a great story and a powerful message. We are privileged to work with our distinguished partners to bring this story to audiences across southern Africa and around the world.” said Nzima.

In line with SABC 1’s communication message Life & TV are  One, The Lucky Specials draws inspiration from social realism.

The movie not only reflects young people’s stories but also gives them tools to navigate life.

Catch this gripping South African film, The Lucky Specials, on Sunday, December 3 2017, at 21h00 – exclusive to SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho!
