Parliament receives Zuma’s resignation letter

Speak­er of the Nation­al Assem­bly, Bale­ka Mbete has on Thurs­day, Feb­ru­ary 15, got a let­ter from Pres­i­dent Jacob Zuma.

The let­ter informed her of his res­ig­na­tion as the Pres­i­dent of the Repub­lic of South Africa.

The Pres­i­dent resigned with imme­di­ate effect.

It will be pub­lished in the Par­lia­men­tary Announce­ments Tabling and Com­mit­tees (ATC) diary, for the con­sid­er­a­tion of Mem­bers of Par­lia­ment.

Chief Jus­tice Mogo­eng Mogo­eng informed Mbete of his avail­abil­i­ty to pre­side over the Nation­al Assem­bly’s elec­tion of the new Pres­i­dent this evening [Thurs­day], Feb­ru­ary 15.

Elec­tion of the Pres­i­dent, planned for Fri­day, 16 Feb­ru­ary 16, 2018, will be today [Thurs­day] at 14.00.

This pro­gres­sion plan of the present sit­ting of the Nation­al Assem­bly from con­sid­er­ing a pro­posed Motion of No Con­fi­dence in the Pres­i­dent, to that of elect­ing a Pres­i­dent.

Mbete thanks, Pres­i­dent Zuma for his ser­vice for the peo­ple of South Africa over the most recent eight years and wish­es him well.
