Neither the Guptas nor Dudu Myeni will show up before the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises’ Inquiry into State Capture on Tuesday as scheduled.
Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises Natasha Mazzone said the Guptas have flown the coop and are not in South Africa. Myeni claims she is as yet wiped out, saying they still can’t seem to see the doctor’s note.
Mazzone depicted their nonappearance is an outrageous mishandle of the Committee’s obligingness.
She said this is an unsatisfactory nonchalance for Parliament and the Constitution under which this inquiry was built up.
She added that disregarding the Committee can’t be permitted to proceed.
“Tomorrow,[on Tuesday] the DA will ask for that the Guptas and Myeni are summoned to show up. Should they at that point overlook the summons they will confer an offense and in this manner subject to a fine or to the imprisonment of up to a year,” said Mazzone.
Portfolio Committees are enabled by the Constitution to call any person they see fit.
Mazzone said that the Guptas and Myeni have neglected to show up, while not astounding, display their utter contempt for the Parliament of South Africa.
A week ago, the Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba also declined to show up on the date asked for as he asserted he required more time to prepare.
Gigaba is set to show up on Tuesday.
Mazzone said DA won’t rest until the Guptas, Duduzane Zuma, Myeni, and Salim Essa, in any event, have shown up before the Committee and are considered responsible for their part in state capture.
