The Democratic Alliance says it takes note of the finding by the Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, that Limpopo Deputy Speaker, Lehlogonolo Masoga must pay back a whopping R125 000 citizen’s cash brought about while surfing pornography.
It is alleged Limpopo Legislature settled the telephone bill.
According to the Public Protector’s report, Masoga kept running up this huge bill on subscription services while meandering obscenity sites on his telephone while on an official trip to the USA in August 2014.
The Public Protector’s report on Monday found that the Deputy Speaker did not act in an ethical manner.
The DA Limpopo Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle said his party will engage with Speaker, Polly Boshilo, to execute the Public Protector’s decision with quick impact.
“Boshilo must guarantee that they recuperate the amount in full before the end of this term,” said Smalle.
He added that DA will ask the Ethics Committee to charge the Deputy Speaker for net unscrupulous conduct,” said Smalle.
He said if found liable, the Ethics Committee must impose a maximum sanction.
Smalle said DA trusts that this decision should serve as a warning to lawmakers and officials who mishandle state assets.
“DA will vigorously protect the people’s money to enable better services for the people,” added Smalle.
