Polestar prowess improves Volvo electrified cars

SA Volvo dealerships to sell new S60 brands

The US carmaker, Volvo announced on Thursday it is launching upgraded electrified performance offer, Polestar Engineered for its new 60 Series T8 Twin Engine model plug-in hybrid sedans.

The automobile giant reveals one-week before it makes known the unveiling of the new S60 premium sports of its first US manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina.

Volvo Cars also announced that it will launch the new S60 range in South Africa next year.

The Group said the Polestar Engineered derivative has not yet confirmed for the local market [South Africa], saying performance figures at this stage refer to US specification.

Volvo Cars President and Chief Executive Officer Håkan Samuelsson said the plant is the sole production site for the new S60 premium, to make the first sports model in the US.

Polestar Engineered, created by Volvo Cars’ electric execution arm Polestar, is a complete offer, applying Polestar’s performance engineering expertise to the car’s wheels, brakes, suspension and engine control unit.

“Electric cars are our future. Today we begin another period of Volvo electrified models improved by Polestar’s performance engineering prowess, “explains Samuelsson.

He adds “This grounded strategy is our shared belief in an electric future for the car industry.”

Samuelsson said the offer is only available on the top-of-the-line T8 Twin Engine position over Volvo’s R Design versions.

It will likewise offer “on the new V60 estate and XC60 SUV from next year, available in limited numbers through Volvo dealerships and Care by Volvo, the organisation’s premium car subscription service,” said Samuelsson.

New lightweight wheels have an open design to flaunt the eye-catching golden painted brake callipers, the new hallmark colour for Polestar Engineered components.

Polestar emblems, dark chrome exhaust, and golden safety belts likewise identify Volvo car outfitted with Polestar Engineered.

It throws the Brembo mono-square brake callipers in one piece and optimised for rigidity.

Brake pads have increased heat tolerance while the brake discs’ slotted design further improves heat reduction.

Polestar engineered multi-link front and back suspension incorporate premium Öhlins shock absorbers with duel-flow valve that permits stiffening in the springs and dampeners while keeping comfort.

They share the strut bar and adjustable shock absorber design with the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid performance car.

Fine-tuning of the engine’s control unit increases the S60 electrified T8 Twin Engine output to 415hp (305kW) combined, with 670Nm of torque–the standard T8 Twin Engine delivers 400hp (294kW) and 640Nm combined.

The software upgrades improve fuel consumption and emissions-neutral performance and refine the automatic gear selection.

Senior vice president of research and development at Volvo Cars Henrik Green said the new S60 T8 Polestar Engineered is an electrified car that does what you want it to do.

“All components have been fine-tuned to work together, delivering a responsive and exciting driver’s car,” said Green.
