In a drive to eke out the world struggle icon, the late former President Nelson Mandela’s acumen: “We must never forget that it is our duty to protect this environment” Shoprite Group announces it is staging Africa’s biggest cleanup campaign.

Retail giant expects more than 6000 people from nine countries to take part in almost 500 events.

The five-day event, which begins on July 14 is aiming at getting rid of garbage from the communities.

The Group said it hopes to launch the movement of active citizens, acting for change by cleaning and keeping hygienic public areas.

“Plastic waste is putting the environment under considerable pressure with the equal to a garbage truck of plastic being dumped into our oceans every minute.

South Africa risks running out of landfill space over the next couple of years,” the Group said

The chain store describes recycling as central to this initiative, saying they encourage organisers to partner with local recyclers or waste pickers to ensure that most of what they collect recycling.

With this focus, the retailer said it aims to highlight the business opportunities available through the recycling of paper, glass, plastic and other material.

Anybody can join via the website www.actforchange.africa, which the Group developed in partnership with volunteerism organisation Brownie Points.

“The digital platform enables users to create their own cleanups or join an existing one in their area.

It also contains information about the nearest recycler or waste management company,”

The retail giant explains that organisers get guidelines on platform cleanup what their duties are as hosts, how to market their event and what to do on the day and after the cleanup.

The Group expects participants to share their experience on social media.
