In a drive to ensure protection of children, Limpopo police have made impassioned plea to members of the community to take care of their kids from going astray or harmed.
The appeal came in the wake of an incident in which Jan Katlego Mphela (8) of Marapong Ext 4 outside Lephalale drowned in the nearby sewage dam.
In a statement on Wednesday, Police Spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said in that fateful day [November 25] Katlego was playing with his two friends swimming when he drowned in an old sewage dam.
“His friends ran home to seek help and summoned the police to the scene. Police responded together with other role players and started with the search operation until they retrieved the boy’s lifeless body from the sewage dam,” said Ngoepe.
Ngoepe said police would like to reiterate their earnest call to members of the community to always keep an eye on their children to ensure their safety.
“Parents and guardians should take note we are now in a rainy season, let us all be responsible and get worried about the children’s whereabouts,” warned Ngoepe.
Ngoepe said since it is the festive season period and children will be on holidays, their safety must be a priority, adding that parents must talk to their kids and make them to know of the all the possible dangers around them.
He said police opened an inquest docket and investigations are still continuing.
