Outraged throng of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had on Sunday raged the cellphone outlet at Mall of the North in Polokwane in protest against photos of their leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu captioned “abusers of democracy” at the Vodacom Journalists of the Year Awards.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed the suspects stormed the shop and vandalised the property.
“Their attack affected two shops, however, the other shop didnt open a case as yet,” said Ngoepe.
He said police were investigating a case of malicious damage to property.
Ngoepe said at this stage the suspect are not known and no arrest has been made.
In an statement on Monday Democratic Alliance (DA) Limpopo Premier Candidate Jacques Smalle said he has opened a case of malicious damage to property against the EFF hooligans that vandalised a Vodacom store, causing damage estimated at R500 000.
“We added accessory to a crime charges for the owner of the vehicle utilised in this violent attack,” said Smalle.
“This violent attack on the store comes in challenge to a picture of Malema and Shivambu inscribed “abusers of democracy” by a keynote speaker at the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards. Surveillance cameras caught photos of the EFF touching base at the shopping centre,” said Smalle.
Smalle cautioned this wretched demonstration is another case of EFF strategies to fall back on brutality when they don’t get their direction, saying for this situation it prompted damage to property that could have led to the injury of innocent spectators or unassuming customers.
“This attack on Vodacom is a view communicated by a keynote speaker and not simply the organisation,” added Smalle.
