Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chairperson, Athol Trollip has dismissed speculation that party leader, Mmusi Maimane’s future remain in a critical state.
“Maimane remains our leader until a Federal Congress planned for 2021 decided otherwise. Any talk of leadership change before holding a Federal Congress must be dispelled,” said Trollip.
Speculation surfaced following the party’s poor performance in this year’s elections which brought about less votes than the past elections.
Maimane is the first DA leader to fail growing the party’s at the polls.
As members of the Federal Executive, which controls and coordinates the activities of the Party, and implement decisions, we are as a whole responsible for the results of elections whether great or not.
The weight does not sit on the shoulders of an individual.
“As the Leadership of the Party, at both a National and Provincial Level, we are unambiguous in our support for Maimane.
He led the DA with exemption since the 2015 Nelson Mandela Bay Federal Congress, and his unopposed election in 2018,” said Trollip.
Where the misfortunes happened, said Trollip, DA will work on regaining the trust of the people as the party goes into the 2021 Local Government Elections,
He said DA will begins with two by-decisions taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay as as early as Wednesday, this will be the beginning of winning back the Bay
“We will never celebrate the loss of voters. We are not oblivious to support in some areas nor deaf to the voices of those who chose to support another party in this election,” said Trollip.
Trollip said where DA has made inroads in new communities it will fortify those bonds.
“We do not underestimate the bravery many showed when they cast their vote next to the DA for the very first time. Once again, we thank you,” he added.
