Police tracked down rhino poaching syndicate, three arrested

A joint police units includ­ing farm­ers and pri­vate secu­ri­ty led to the arrest of rhi­no poach­ing syn­di­cate sus­pects in Mod­i­molle and Vaal­wa­ter out­side Lep­ha­lale, spokesper­son, Colonel Moat­she Ngoepe said on Wednes­day.

Ngoepe said police arrest­ed three sus­pects fol­low­ing an inci­dent which occurred in the Rankin’s Pass area out­side Mod­i­molle, where the syn­di­cate killed one rhi­no and removed two horns.

“Farm­ers imme­di­ate­ly noti­fied the police. With the sup­port of their heli­copter police fol­lowed their tracks until they arrest­ed three sus­pects in Rankin’s Pass and Vaal­wa­ter area. Man­hunt is still under­way for two oth­er iden­ti­fied sus­pects on the run,” said Ngoepe.

Ngoepe said police recov­ered a motor vehi­cle, a hunt­ing rifle with a silencer, eight rounds of ammu­ni­tion and an axe includ­ing rhi­no horns.

He said the three sus­pects aged between 31 and 37 will appear in the Mod­i­molle and Vaal­wa­ter Magistrate’s Courts.

Act­ing Limpopo Police Com­mis­sion­er, Major Gen­er­al Samuel Man­ala has com­mend­ed the sting units includ­ing pri­vate secu­ri­ty and farm­ers who took part dur­ing the arrest for the job well done.

The Police are appeal­ing to any­one with infor­ma­tion that can lead to the arrest of the remain­ing sus­pects to con­tact Colonel Alpheus Mokale at 082 565 6524 or the crime stop num­ber 0860010111or the near­est police sta­tion.

The Police inves­ti­ga­tions are still con­tin­u­ing.
