Three of the five awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from holding cells in Witpoort outside Lephalale on Monday night couldn’t find a hole to hide from justice.
Lesiba Frans Machaba (27) from Kauletse village and Paul Madira (19) from Botsalanong (Friendship) village were re-arrested on Wednesday at the homes while Jappie Shiko (29) from Kitty Village was cornered by community members at Phahladira Mall in Shongwane.
They are all locals, except for two Zimbabwean nationals, Bongani Sibanda (31) and Sipho Mpofu (39) — both are still on the run.
At the time of escaping from prison, police charged Mpofu with murder.
Sibanda is treating gunshot wounds sustained during business robbery.
Limpopo Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said prisoners escaped on Monday night.
“It is alleged the prisoners escaped through a hole inside the cells,” said Mojapelo.
Mojapelo said police have opened a case of escaping from lawful custody.
He said police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police are appealing to community members to help with any information that can lead to the re-arrest of the remaining escapees to contact Detective Warrant Officer Ratlou Morudu at 082 468 8931, the Crime Stop number 0860010111 or the nearest police station.Follow us on Social Media
