A man is serving 28 years in prison for raping a minor and assaulting her younger sister

Mankweng Regional Court on Wednesday sentenced an elderly man to multiple jail sentences in prison for raping his underage stepdaughter and inflicting burns on her younger sister.

The court had effectively sentenced the 46-year-old man to nine years in prison for raping a nine-year-old girl and 19 years for assault, causing grievous bodily harm to her four-year-old sibling.

According to Limpopo Police Spokesman Brigadier General Motlafela Mojapelo, these heinous crimes took place in Nobody, Thakgalang village, in November 2016.

He said that the crimes were reported to a social worker, who then contacted the police.

Brigadier Mojapelo said the accused was tracked down and arrested, and a subsequent investigation uncovered that he also assaulted his four-year-old stepdaughter, who was found with burn marks.

“Further investigation revealed that the accused had been sexually abusing the nine-year-old victim for a long period”, a police spokesman said.

The Provincial Police Commissioner-in-Chief, Major General Jan Scheepers, said the punishment was a clear message to all that violence against vulnerable citizens was not tolerated and that perpetrators were permanently removed from society.
