Detectives in Lephalale, Limpopo have been commended for apprehending a man who raped and attempted to murder an elderly relative and later sentenced to life in prison.
A 45-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison by Lephalale Regional Court on Thursday for raping an elderly relative at Villa Nora and having tried unsuccessfully to hang her as a cover-up for his horrible acts.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Mojapelo confirmed the conviction follows an incident which occurred on November 11, 2017 which involved a relative taking a 67-year-old woman to a secluded spot and sexually assaulting her.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said that the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Sophie Mantwa Malapile, worked diligently to ensure the accused was kept in custody and justice was done.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the sentence and said perpetrators of sexual violence against the vulnerable, particularly the elderly, have no place in society.
Brigadier Mojapelo said the victim awoke to a knock at her home at around 3am. Upon opening the door, she was greeted by one of her relatives who had come to fetch her following the death of a family member.
“As the victim and the accused headed towards the area where the death occurred, the accused dragged the elderly woman under a bridge and raped her. Trying to cover up his actions, the accused took the victim up the mountain and attempted to hang her. The elderly woman was able to escape and seek help from the nearby community, “said the police spokesperson.
Mojapelo said police were notified about the incident and a rape case was opened.
He said that Detective Warrant Officer Sophie Mantwa Malapile of the Lephalale Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit was assigned to lead the investigation.
“The suspect was arrested a few days later, following a joint operation by the Detectives and Crime Intelligence Unit,” Brigadier Mojapelo said.
