A Zimbabwean national, Sandile Milton Gaza, 42, aka “Trust Shabalala,” appeared in Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Gauteng Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo said Gaza was linked to 25 suspects whose alleged cash-in transit robbery plot was thwarted by a multidisciplinary team led by the National Cash-In-Transit Task Force in Moffatview, south of Johannesburg.
Ten suspects arrested on Wednesday appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Mbambo, said Gaza was arrested in Phomolong, Tembisa on Wednesday by a multi-disciplinary team including the South African Police Service, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Metro Police.
At the time of his arrest, police found a pistol in his possession.
“A further search and seizure of his rented room in Tembisa, we uncovered four assault rifles, five pistols, four firearms, rifle and pistol magazines, more than a thousand different assorted rounds of ammunition, signal jammers, G4S and police bulletproof vests and uniforms, ” said police spokesperson.
The gang faces eight charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives, and possession of hijacked cars.
Ten suspects are expected to return to court on March 3, while Gaza’s case is scheduled for March 7.Both for further investigation.
They were all remanded into custody.
