Police have opened an inquest docket after a subcontractor’s employee fell to death at Matimba Power Station in Lephalale, Limpopo on Friday morning.
The woman, 34, who has not yet been named, fell from the scaffolding while on duty.
“The incident occurred at 9.30am on Friday, when Manalebo Engineering Services employees were working at the plant’s 79 metre level. The supervisor had gone into the boiler to check the lights. When he came out, he noticed that one of the workers was not there,” sources said, adding that the unit controller was on duty doing plant walk when he found the woman’ s body lying on the ground.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said it is yet known what caused the scaffolding to drop to the ground.
“Security personnel, police and an ambulance including labour department officials were called to the scene.”
Mojapelo said police are investigating.
Eskom National Spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha confirmed the incident.
“Yes, Eskom can confirm a fatality at Matimba Power station on Friday morning. Eskom and the police are now investigating the circumstances of the tragic incident, including performing an autopsy,” said Mantshantsha.
Mantshantsha said Eskom will work closely with the family of the deceased and to offer the support.
