In an ongoing effort to encourage other parties to join the Government of National Unity (GNU), ActionSA held discussions with the African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday to explore effective ways of serving the country’s interests following an election with no clear majority winner.
The ANC presented its plans for a GNU, and ActionSA recognised strong principles underlying the proposal.
However, the party raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and weakening of accountability if most opposition parties were to join ‘grand coalition’.
ActionSA President, Herman Mashaba warned pursuit of power and retention of privileges could result in decisions being made for self-interest rather than the benefit of the country.
He stressed importance of good governance, expressing worries about a potentially larger cabinet and pre-determined votes to hold the President accountable.
The party outlined its strategy to function as a “constructive unofficial opposition,” offering support on a case-by-case basis for proposals that would benefit South Africans.
ActionSA also made it clear that it would hold the government accountable without bias when necessary.
Despite its reservations, the party was satisfied with the tone of the meeting and the establishment of previously closed lines of communication.
ActionSA remains dedicated to representing the national interest through its presence in the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures.
