AfriForum accuses ANC of escalating U.S. diplomatic row, urges farm murder reforms

JOHANNESBURG—South African advocacy group AfriForum on Thursday blamed the ruling African National Congress (ANC) for exacerbating a diplomatic rift with the United States, claiming the crisis could have been averted had the government heeded its proposed solutions.

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel accused ANC leaders of undermining bilateral ties by hosting Iran’s ambassador at party headquarters and making “anti-American statements.”

He singled out Department of International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola for alleging U.S. President Donald Trump promoted a “white supremacy” agenda, a move Kriel said invited retaliatory measures.

The group urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to denounce the “Kill the Boer” chant, classify farm murders as priority crimes, and strengthen police collaboration with lawful community patrols.

It also demanded revisions to South Africa’s Expropriation Act, including scrapping clauses allowing uncompensated land seizures and pre-court approvals.

Kriel linked Trump recent criticism of South Africa’s farm violence and property rights policies to the diplomatic strain, stressing that “concrete steps” to address these issues could defuse tensions.
