Amidst President Ramaphosa’s speech decraying GBV, another ‘pregnant’ woman shot dead

Just hours after President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke at the second Presidential Summit on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in Midrand, Johannesburg on Tuesday, condemning continued rapes and killings of women, an unidentified “pregnant” woman  was found murdered in Bethesdorp,  Gqeberha.

According to police, a woman in her early 30s was found dead in a ditch on the Old St Albans gravel road between Booysen Park and St Albans at 7:45 on Wednesday morning.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the spokesperson for the Police, said officers were alerted to the gruesome discovery by a truck driver.

“The deceased is a black female of approximately 30 to 35 years of age.  Upon discovering her body, she was still wearing a white and brownish sleeping gown, blue pyjama pants with white stars, and green bedroom sleeping boots.”

Colonel Naidu says preliminary investigation reveals the woman died of a gunshot wound to the head.

“It’s suspected that the deceased may have been pregnant, but a postmortem will confirm.”

Naidu said police suspect the woman may have been shot on Tuesday night.

Anyone who can assist in identifying the woman or may have any other information that can assist in the investigation is asked to contact SAPS Bethelsdorp, D/Lt Col Alan Stuurman on 071 608 1641 or 041 404 3010 or Crime Stop 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.
