The African National Congress (ANC) applauded South Africans who refused to participate in the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)-led national shutdown on Monday, branding the party “extremist and regressive.”
In a statement on Monday, the governing party National Spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says there is no place for vigilantism and the forcible removal of an incumbent government in South Africa.
She said the ANC is committed to doing what the people of South Africa expect, demand, and deserve.
“The ANC acknowledges that everyone has the right to protest, but protests must be lawful – in line with the Constitution. The Bill of Rights does not allow a person or group to engage in an illegal protest action, or impose it on everyone who does not support it,” added Bhengu-Motsiri.
