African National Congress (ANC) has relieved Obed Bapela of his duties as Deputy Chairman of the International Relations Subcommittee and ANC NEC Sub-committee member on International Relations, citing a breach of the party’s constitution.
This decision comes after Bapela allegedly engaged in an unauthorised meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs on October 7, 2024, where he discussed strengthening economic and trade relations, contradicting ANC’s long standing policies on Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara.
The ANC expressed concern over Bapela’s actions, emphasising importance of senior members demonstrating “revolutionary morality and discipline” and upholding the party’s principles.
Bapela’s failure to provide detailed account of the meeting has raised serious doubts about his judgment and commitment to ANC values.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula stated that the matter will be referred to the Chief National Presenter for disciplinary measures, citing a violation of party guidelines.
The ANC has reaffirmed its support for Polisario Front and its stance against Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara.
Background on the tensions
The ANC has historically maintained principled stance against Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara, aligning itself with struggles of oppressed peoples worldwide.
The party has consistently condemned Morocco’s occupation, viewing it as violation of international law, and has called for implementation of United Nations resolutions demanding referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between South Africa and Morocco, with diplomatic relations strained due to South Africa’s support for Polisario Front.
The ANC’s actions demonstrate its commitment to upholding its principles and policies, particularly regarding Western Sahara.
