ANC urges South Africans to defend democracy amid disappointing 2024 election results

African National Congress (ANC)has made an impassioned call on all South Africans to resist efforts of those forces who want to weaken our democracy, undermine our electoral processes and disregard the will of the people.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula  promised the electorate as a nation, “we will stand together against those who threaten violence and instability.”

In a statement following poor election results, Mbalula said people of South Africa, as they have shown in the past, will not tolerate any threats to our democracy.

According to the partial results of the 2024 South African national and provincial elections, the ANC got less than 50% of the total votes.

. With over 65% of the votes counted, ANC got around 42% of the votes, which is a huge drop from 57.5% in 2019

“The people of South Africa have made their wishes known in free and fair elections and we must all respect them,” said Mbalula.

He added that the ANC once again extends its appreciation to all voters, many of whom waited in queues for several hours, even late into the night.
