Security guards shot an alleged poacher dead and two Rhino carcases found at a game farm in Dorset outside Lephalale, police gave an account of Wednesday.
Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said the incident occurred in the early hours on Tuesday morning.
“Security officers at the game farm claims they hurried to the scene to investigate in the wake of hearing gun shots. Upon arrival, they saw three unknown male suspects, one armed with a rifle. The security officers attempted to catch the suspects, however one of them attempted to shoot at them and was then shot dead,” said Brigadier Mojapelo.
Two suspects disappeared into the nearby bushes while the identity of the deceased is still unknown at this stage.
Mojapelo said the watchmen made police aware of the scene, adding that during the underlying investigations they found an axe, and two rhino carcases, with three horns cut off.
“During further investigations, police found a rifle with three live ammunition,” said Mojapelo.
He said police are investigating a case of murder, rhino poaching and possession of unlawful firearm and ammunition.
Police are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects to contact Warrant Officer JJ van Heerden at 082 414 2337, the Crime stop number 0860010111 or the nearest police.
