Beitbridge immigration officer sentenced for graft

The Musina Magistrate’s Court on Thursday found Beitbridge Home Affairs immigration officer, Khuliso Ravele 36, guilty of corruption and sentenced her to four years in prison, wholly suspended for 5 years.

The Limpopol Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, said on Saturday that Ravele, 36, an immigration officer, was approached on October 14, 2017 by a foreign national victim who requested assistance in extending her stay in the country.

In response, Maluleke said Ravele offered to help the woman but demanded R300 in bribe.

According to captain Maluleke, after being assisted, the victim was asked to show her passport by border patrol officers.

“During the interrogation, it came out that the victim had paid money to Home Affairs officers so that her passport could get stamped. Ravele then was arrested and charged with corrupting public office.”

Maluleke said the matter was subsequently transferred to the HAWK’s serious corruption investigation unit for further investigation. He added that Ravele was granted bails until he was sentenced to four years in prison which is wholly suspended for five years.

As part of his sentence, he will also be placed on corrective supervision for 2 years at the Sibisa court
