Bester’s daring prison escape plot thickens, ninth suspect faces multiple criminal charges

A 31-year-old Zimbabwean national, Zanda Moyo appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing four charges.

Moyo had been arrested in Johannesburg on Sunday as the ninth suspect for allegedly aiding Thabo Bester, infamously known as ‘Facebook rapist and murderer’ in his escape from Mangaung Correctional Services in May last year.

Moyo, looking solitary in the dock, had his rights read out to him

He was charged with violation of a body, aiding and abetting a convict, harbouring an escaped convict, and fraud.

When asked by the court if he would appoint a lawyer or use Legal Aid South Africa, which offers free services, Moyo, seemingly confused, said he was still consulting his family.

The State Prosecutor noted that Moyo appeared to be having difficulty understanding and responding in isiZulu, and asked him which language he preferred. Moyo replied that he speaks isiNdebele.

It is unclear whether Moyo is legally in South Africa.

The case was postponed to June 20, 2023 to clarify Moyo’s legal representation and court interpreter. Moyo will join Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, Bester, and six others – Senohe Matsoara, Teboho Lipholo, Motanyane Masukela, Tieho Makhotsa, Zolile Sekeleni, and Nastassja Jansen in the dock as the ninth accused.
