Bizarre grave violations: Limpopo police investigates theft of dead body

Limpopo police in Mokwakwaila, at Senakwe Section, Mopani have launched an investigation into bizarre grave violations and stealing of the buried body.

.Drama unfolded on Sunday, February 5, 2023, when one of the relatives supposedly went to the graveyard to spruce it up for the impending tombstone unveiling. However, she felt a chill run down her spine upon discovering the grave had been dug open with an empty casket and the body missing.

She then raised the alarm with her family and notified the police of the terrible sight.

In a statement on Tuesday night, Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said when police got to the burial site, they found a mysterious scene involving a breached burial ground and an uncovered casket with no dead body inside.

“A preliminary investigation conducted at the scene determined that the alleged criminal(s) gained access to the cemetery by cutting the perimeter fence. Subsequently, they dug a pit next to the grave, got into the casket, and removed the body,” said Brigadier Mojapelo.

Modike Philemon Masedi, whose corpse was stolen, allegedly died on January 15, 2022 and was buried seven days later.

Brigadier Mojapelo said the reason for this occurrence is still mysterious at this stage.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has expressed dismay at what has happened at the said graveyard and has requested that the culprit(s) be searched and held accountable.

“We encourage community members in the area to heed the unfolding investigations conducted by the police and refrain from blaming others as these often lead to instigators of vigilantism in which people take justice into their own hands,” added Lt Gen Hadebe.
