Democratic Alliance (DA) is intensifying its calls for the resignation of Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the Minister in the Presidency, as new details emerge surrounding a Hawks investigation into her alleged involvement in a R2.5 million tender corruption case from her time as Municipal Manager in Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality.
DA Member of Parliament Dianne Kohler Barnard insists that Ntshavheni cannot remain in her ministerial position while facing serious criminal scrutiny.
“We urge her to step down immediately. If she refuses, it’s imperative that the President take action and relieve her of her responsibilities,” Kohler Barnard affirmed.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of corruption accusations aimed at ANC Ministers within President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet.
The DA is raising concerns about Ramaphosa’s response to these allegations, questioning his commitment to integrity as the leader of the executive branch.
The Hawks investigation has concluded and has been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) after senior managers in Ba-Phalaborwa pointed fingers at Ntshavheni in this corruption scandal. Additionally, the Auditor-General’s report has leveled serious criticisms against her oversight of the local municipality’s financial practices.
In light of these developments, the DA is demanding that the NPA initiate criminal proceedings against Ntshavheni. Furthermore, the party is advocating for the establishment of a Parliamentary Committee dedicated to monitoring the Presidency, emphasizing the urgent need for increased accountability and transparency.
As Kohler Barnard succinctly stated, “A Cabinet Minister under criminal investigation for corruption has no place in Cabinet—end of story.”
