The Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team has arrested a 49-year-old man charged with fraud and violating the Tax Administration Act,” Hawks Gauteng spokesperson, Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said.on Tuesday.
Captain Mulamu said Meshack Mpapadima Mafokane, and his co-accused Elias Oman Magheje, 51, arrested in February this year are alleged to have defrauded SARS about R9, 9 million.
Makofane turned himself in at the Hawks’ headquarters on Tuesday accompanied by his lawyer.
He was granted R 15 000 bail when he appeared in Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court.
Magheje is out on R30 000 bail.
The arrests follow an internal SARS investigation, which uncovered that about R9.9 million was transferred to the company’s bank account through fraudulent documents.
“It is alleged that between November 2017 and January 2018, Makofane and Magheje had through their Cape Town-based Construction Company, Machembe Construction and Projects CC submitted fraudulent value-added tax claim invoices for SARS via e-filing,” said Captain Mulamu.
Both accused are expected back in court on June 29, 2022, for the docket.
