COSATU and DA condemn Mkhwebane’s racist comments

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) have joined forces in condemning impeached Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s recent racist comments directed towards individuals of Indian descent in a social media rant.

Mkhwebane’s remarks came in the wake of her dismissal appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein, where she was impeached.

In a troubling post, Mkhwebane accused key figures of Indian origin of persecuting her, sparking outrage and backlash from COSATU and the broader South African community.

COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks, emphasized the importance of building a non-racial society and urged Mkhwebane to educate herself on South Africa’s liberation struggle and the Freedom Charter. Parks made it clear that hate speech has no place in a society striving to overcome the legacy of apartheid and discrimination.

Meanwhile, the DA has announced they will be referring Mkhwebane to Parliamentary Ethics Committee for violating the Code of Ethics for members.

Parliamentary Chief Whip, George Michalakis, stated that Mkhwebane failed to uphold the Constitution and laws of the Republic and must be held accountable for her divisive and racist remarks.

Both COSATU and the DA have stressed the need to combat hate speech and promote unity in South Africa.
