COSATU members demands justice for slain domestic worker

Scores of members from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and its affiliates gathered outside the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Protesters demand justice for a 21-year-old domestic worker who was brutally murdered in January 2022.

Angry protesters held up placards with messages like “No Justification for killing a Domestic Worker. You Deserve Life Sentence” as they called for harsh punishment for the nurse accused of orchestrating the heinous crime.

Sithembile Xulu 48, a professional nurse, and her accomplice, Simon Mogale 38, were in court facing charges related to the murder of Busisiwe Nxumalo, who was found dead with her throat slit in a dumpsite near Xulu’s former home in Lenasia South.

The case has been plagued by delays, with the magistrate postponing the proceedings multiple times.

Protesters expressed frustration with the slow pace of justice, arguing that “justice delayed is justice denied.”

Xulu, who is also facing fraud charges for allegedly attempting to cash in on life insurance policies worth nearly R2 million following Nxumalo’s murder, is set to appear in court again on October 4 for a bail application.

COSATU members are determined to keep the pressure on authorities to ensure that those responsible for Nxumalo’s death are held accountable.

As the community continues to mourn the loss of a young life, the call for justice grows louder, with COSATU leading the charge for a fair and swift resolution to this tragic case.
