COSATU praises Eskom’s progressive commitments to end load-shedding

In a groundbreaking move that could spell the end of load-shedding in South Africa, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has applauded Eskom’s ambitious plans to invest in transformers and add 28GW to the electricity grid over the next four years.

The announcement, which includes the addition of 101 transformers over the next four years and a total of 170 by 2032, with a combined additional generation capacity of 53GW, has been hailed as a game-changer for the country’s energy security.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s commitment to build 14,000 kms of new transmission lines has also been welcomed, as it will further strengthen the nation’s energy infrastructure.

COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks, commended the critical investments, stating that they will help restore Eskom’s financial stability and ensure the provision of reliable and affordable electricity to fuel the economy.

Parks also highlighted the potential for Eskom to export surplus electricity to the region, which could boost economic growth in Southern Africa.

The decision to source transformers locally has been met with approval, as it is expected to create thousands of jobs and opportunities for exports to the continent.

Parks expressed optimism that these initiatives will lay the foundation for economic growth, job creation, poverty reduction, and attracting much-needed investment.

“With these commitments in place, South Africa is poised to put an end to the era of load-shedding and pave the way for a brighter, more economically prosperous future,” added Parks.
