The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 1,692 new COVID-19 cases discovered in South Africa on Friday, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3,720,645. This increase represents a positive rate of 6.1 percent.
NICD is a division of the National Health Laboratory Service, which continues to provide laboratory-based surveillance to inform the public health responses to COVID-19 in South Africa.
Due to ongoing audit exercises by the National Department of Health (NDoH), deaths are likely to accumulate on COVID-19.
The NDoH reported 10 deaths on Friday, 1 occurred during the last 24 to 48 hours. This puts the overall number of fatalities at 100,042.
A total of 23,866,743 tests were performed in the public and private sectors.
The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng with 43 percent, followed by Kwa-Zulu Natal accounting for 21 percent.
Western Cape accounted for 20 percent, Eastern Cape and Free State each accounted for 4 percent, Mpumalanga accounted for 3 percent, Limpopo and North West each accounted for 2 percent, and Northern Cape 1 percent.
