Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to break his silence, at least since 2021 on the alarming news that he has allegedly been aware of a questionable VBS-linked loan received by Justice Minister Thembi Simelane.
According to DA Spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development, Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, media reports suggest the President was informed about this dubious transaction prior to Simelane’s original appointment to Cabinet in 2021.
Breytenbach said this revelation raises serious questions about President Ramaphosa’s insistence on demanding an explanation from Simelane, despite allegedly knowing about the matter for years.
“The public deserves to know why this issue was only recently brought before the ANC’s Integrity Commission, especially in light of ongoing criminal investigation by the Hawks,” said Breytenbach.
He said Simelane’s failure to make loan agreement and proof of payment publicly available only adds to suspicion surrounding the transaction.
“The lack of transparency in this matter is concerning, especially considering her oversight of institutions involved in the investigation of this scandal,” said Breytenbach.
Breytenbach said it is imperative for President Ramaphosa to provide full transparency on this issue and explain why he appointed a Minister with such a questionable past.
The DA demands President must also address why he has failed to take decisive action against Simelane despite serious allegations brought against her.
“As the public waits for answers, the DA continues to press for accountability and integrity in government. We urge Ramaphosa to address these concerning revelations without further delay,” added Breytenbach.
