The Democratic Alliance (DA) plans to write to Defence Minister, Thandi Modise to request an independent investigation into allegations of corruption and bribery at Beitbridge Border Post implicating the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). officers.
This follows the allegations that SANDF soldiers accepted bribes from illegal immigrants attempting to enter the country, as uncovered by the Carte Blanche exposé on Sunday.
In a statement, DA Shadow Minister of Defence, Kobus Marais, said this brazen corruption by people maintaining law and order at our borders highlights a broader problem of poor oversight and general corruption within the Department of Defence and the SANDF.
Marias said the situation also further fuels the public’s mistrust of the army and the animosity between South Africans and immigrants who enter the country legally.
Marais said the Minister must launch an independent investigation into what happened to ensure officers who breached the law and disobeyed their constitutional duties, obligations, and responsibilities can be held responsible.
As part of the investigation, Marais said, the probe should also focus on finding ways to prevent such illegal activity from taking place again.
He said the DA intends to use the opportunity to question the department when it appears before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence on Wednesday.
