The Democratic Alliance (DA) expressed its satisfaction on Friday following Johannesburg High Court’s decision to dismiss the uMKhondo we Sizwe party’s urgent bid to postpone next week’s Judicial Service Commission (JSC) interviews.
This ruling comes hot on the heels of last week’s Western Cape High Court interdict, which prevented impeached former judge president John Hlophe from participating in JSC processes.
In a statement, DA National Spokesperson, Karabo Khakhau lauded the court’s decision as a crucial victory for South Africa’s judiciary, emphasising importance of upholding judicial integrity at all times.
“By rejecting the MK Party’s attempts to delay the JSC interviews, court has ensured that the process of selecting new judges can proceed without interference from individuals who have been found guilty of gross misconduct,” said Khakhau.
Khakhau reiterated the DA’s unwavering commitment to defending independence of judiciary, warning against allowing individuals like Dr. Hlophe, who has faced impeachment, to influence the selection of future judges.
“Influencing selection of judges by individuals with questionable ethics would pose a significant threat to public’s trust in our legal system and rule of law. Today’s ruling reaffirms principles of accountability and ethical conduct as essential components of our democracy,” Khakhau stated.
DA affirmed the party’s dedication to ensuring that individuals appointed to the JSC are held to the highest standards and are committed to upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution.
“We welcome the court’s confirmation that JSC is well-equipped to carry out its crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of our judiciary. The DA will continue its efforts to ensure those appointed to JSC are beyond reproach and are steadfast in upholding the principles of our Constitution,” added Khakhau.
