The Democratic Alliance (DA) Leader, John Steenhuisen says he has written to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, to request that an ad hoc Parliamentary Committee be established to investigate Eskom’s corruption.
He noted, “The nation needs to know the full, unvarnished truth. The allegations suggest that the ANC is intentionally sabotaging South Africa’s electricity system to advance its own selfish, corrupt goals. If accurate, this would be an act of treason – a heinous betrayal of the country by the governing party.”
Steenhuisen said that Andre De Ruyter’s interview last week provided insight into the corruption that exists around Eskom, the country’s main economic engine, and the involvement of high-level officials in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet.
The DA leader said that Parliament should launch a complete investigation into the ANC’s criminal involvement at Eskom.
“This inquiry would have the power to make recommendations for further action based on the testimonies and evidence.
The question of establishing an ad hoc committee to do this will be debated and voted on during the plenary on March 16, 2023.”
“Despite ANC denials that it is involved in corruption at Eskom, the party should strongly support DA’s request for an ad hoc parliamentary committee to uncover the true culprits.
The move, according to Steehuisen, should mark the end of the criminal capture of our institutions and state-owned enterprises and allegations against the ruling party.
