DA ousts the ANC and takes control of Lephalale Local Municipality

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has ousted the ANC and taken control of Lephalale Local Municipality, electing caucus leader, Councillor Nico Pienaar as new mayor.

Pienaar was elected on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement on Friday, DA Lephalale’s Political Head, Beyers Smit, said the party would now focus on a smooth transition and clean governance.

He said this will allow other political parties to commit to the interests of local residents.

Smit said the DA has the utmost confidence in Mayor Pienaar to uphold our standards of governance.

He said DA is callingl upon all residents to rally behind the mayor to bring about positive change.

“Preparations for the council session to elect a mayor were hampered by division in the ANC ranks, which manifested itself in violence during the meeting,” said Smit.

“There can be no more mayhem and a lack of leadership under the DA, he said.

Smit said “We nominated our own candidate, who won the position from the ANC.”

“Our energetic mayor and his team are united in our quest to ensure transparent governance, building the economy and the municipality’s finances, creating jobs, delivering services and tackling water issues,” added Smit
