Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has penned a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa advocating for more cabinet positions for his party.
Steenhuisen, in his letter dated June 24, 2024, acknowledges progress made in forming a government that works for all South Africans but raises concerns about the proportional allocation of positions.
With the DA’s significant support within the Government of National Unity (GNU), Steenhuisen argues that the party deserves nine positions in cabinet rather than the six currently on offer.
Proposing specific portfolios such as Sports, Arts and Culture, Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform, or Public Service and Administration, Steenhuisen suggests by allocating two additional positions to the DA, the government can better reflect the will of the people as expressed in the electoral outcome.
Steenhuisen advocates for increasing the number of Deputy Ministers from the DA to ensure the national interest is adequately served.
By pushing for these changes, Steenhuisen says DA aims to create a government that truly represents the diversity and aspirations of the South African population.
