The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes a ruling made today (Tuesday) by the Supreme Court of Appea (SCA) , which confirmed that former President Jacob Zuma must repay the country’s money spent on legal fees.
DA Federal Leader John Steenhuisen said that his party had previously obtained an order from the High Court on the matter, and Zuma subsequently appealed it to the SCA.
In respect of the DA’s action, the cost has been R16 million, the party said, but it estimates the real cost is probably closer to R50 million.
“Today’s judgment dismissed Zuma’s appeal and confirmed that the state prosecutor is only obliged to take action if it is in the government or public interest. This is Zuma’s legal battle, and he has no right to use taxpayers’ money. ”
The DA says that there are strong exceptions for current or former public officials, including former presidents, for misuse of public funds.
Steenhuisen said that Zuma’s tenure was disastrous for South Africa, its economy, and our hard-won democracy.
“We are still reeling from the effects of State Capture and the hollowing out of public institutions that accompanied it. This a victory not for the DA alone, but all South Africans, our Constitution and the Rule of Law,” added Steenhuisen.
