EFF accuses ANC of secret dealings with DA in creation of “GNU”

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has accused African National Congress (ANC) of already deciding to work solely with Democratic Alliance (DA) to form a “Government of National Unity”, excluding other parties

According to EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, this has empowered DA to make unreasonable and irrational demands that would ultimately give control of the economy to those who benefitted from apartheid and colonialism.

In a letter dated June 24, 2024 to President Cyril Ramaphosa, DA leader, John Steenhuisen expressed concerns about the proportional allocation of positions offered to the DA, citing the party’s significant support within the coalition.

Steenhuisen argued that the DA deserved nine cabinet positions instead of the six currently on the table, pointing to the party’s share of support in the recent election.

He proposed adding two additional portfolios from key areas such as Sports, Arts and Culture, Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform, or Public Service and Administration to better reflect the will of the people.

Shivambu revealed EFF had met with the ANC twice to discuss principles for collaboration in the GNU, without making any elitist demands, including those related to National Treasury.

However, he claims the meetings were abruptly cut short, and false report was presented to the ANC, accusing the EFF of making unreasonable demands in order to participate in the GNU.

The EFF believes ANC is voluntarily surrendering power to those seeking to protect their privileged positions, instead of working towards a truly inclusive and transformative government.

“This has raised concerns about the transparency and integrity of the negotiations surrounding creation of the GNU,” added Shivambu.
