EFF calls for end to virtual parliamentary participation, demands physical sittings to resume

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is pushing for an immediate end to virtual parliamentary participation, calling for a return to physical sittings for all sessions and committee meetings.

The party’s National Spokesperson, Leigh-Ann Mathys, argues that virtual platforms, introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, have compromised the work of Parliament.

She cites challenges such as poor network connectivity in rural areas, technical issues disrupting proceedings, and a lack of transparency in virtual voting.

Mathys believes physical sittings are crucial for effective participation and decision-making.

The EFF has suggested affordable alternatives, like the New Way Community Hall in Khayelitsha, to expensive hotels.

The party views the current hybrid model as inadequate, hindering Parliament’s functioning.

Although the EFF participated in virtual sittings out of necessity during the COVID19 pandemic, Mathys emphasizes the need for measures to ensure maximum participation and address logistical challenges.

The party demands prioritisation of physical sittings and provision of spacious meeting rooms to facilitate effective participation.

Failure to address these issues, Mathys warns, this will further compromise parliamentary duties and undermine the legislative process.
