The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng has commended the Hawks, South African Police Service (SAPS), Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), and the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) for their quick action in apprehending three individuals in connection with suspected human trafficking in Sandringham, Johannesburg.
The suspects were arrested after community members raised the alarm about suspicious activities at a house in the area.
The community members noticed naked individuals shouting for help and attempting to escape from the house, leading to the rescue of 26 victims of Ethiopian origin.
The EFF has highlighted the alarming reality of human and drug trafficking crimes in South Africa, particularly in Gauteng.
The party has called for a well-organised crime prevention strategy that includes adequate resources, the eradication of corruption within the police force, and strengthening crime intelligence units.
The EFF also emphasised the need for a specialised Narcotics and Human Trafficking Unit to ensure safer and more economically attractive Gauteng, urging government to fill existing vacancies in the police force, upskill current officers, and adequately resource crime intelligence units.
The EFF’s call for Progressive Internationalism rooted in Anti-Imperialism, Pan Africanism, Peace, Security, and Economic Justice for African people resonates in the wake of this human trafficking case.
“South Africa must play a leading role in advocating for the economic development of neighboring African states and addressing the underdevelopment and poverty that lead to crimes like human trafficking.”
While commending the police for their swift action in this case, the EFF stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and other crimes in Gauteng.
