The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has paid tribute to the late Darlington Michaels, a legendary figure in South African television, who passed away recently.
” Michaels was more than just an actor; he was a cultural icon who resonated deeply with the experiences of black South Africans,” the EFF stated.
Michaels’ iconic role as “Papa G” in the popular soap opera Isidingo remains etched in the minds of South Africans. However, his contribution to the fight against apartheid is equally remarkable.
In the 1980s, Michaels wrote and starred in the anti-apartheid play “Survival,” which exposed the brutal realities of the apartheid regime. This bold move led to his imprisonment for three months without trial.
The EFF hailed Michaels as a revolutionary voice against oppression, whose commitment to fighting injustice through the arts has left an indelible mark.
“As we bid farewell to this giant, we acknowledge his significant contribution to the arts and the fight for a South Africa where black voices and stories matter,” the EFF said.
Michaels’ legacy will continue to inspire future generations of actors and creatives. The EFF extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
