Eskom and PwC settle high court case, paving the way for improved governance

In a pivotal development, Eskom has settled its ongoing high court case with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a legal battle that dates back to 2021.

This case sought to dismantle a controversial cost reduction contract, known as the “Capital Scrubbing engagement,” and aimed to reclaim payments made to both PwC and Nkonki.

The engagement came under intense scrutiny during the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations of state capture, widely recognised as the Zondo Commission.

As part of the settlement, the contentious contract has been nullified, with PwC agreeing to pay Eskom a total of R43 million, marking the conclusion of Eskom’s claims against the firm.

This agreement is a key milestone in Eskom’s ongoing efforts to bolster governance and accountability within the organization. “

Management’s dedication to addressing the issues raised by the Zondo Commission has been crucial in achieving this resolution, affirming our commitment to restoring integrity at Eskom,” stated Dan Marokane, Eskom Group Chief Executive.

Eskom remains focused on advancing its generation recovery efforts, enhancing governance mechanisms, and combating crime and corruption, all while positioning the organization for future energy security, growth, and long-term sustainability that will benefit South Africa and the wider sub-Saharan region.
