Eskom reduces load-shedding to stage 2

Eskom has announced that power cuts will be reduced from stage 4 to stage 3 load-shedding starting from 10 pm on Thursday until 5 am on Friday.

This came after the power utility escalated from stage 3 to 4 on Tuesday morning, saying that it would continue to adjust load-shedding stages depending on the level at which the breakdowns occurred

Eskom has announced the current stage 2 load shedding measures follow the return to service of three units at Majuba, Matimaba, and Arnot power stations, while one unit at Tutuka Power Stations was shut down for repair.

Eskom said two more units are expected to be back online within the next 24 hours.

“This, along with the expected decrease in demand over the weekend, enables Eskom to reduce the load-shedding from Stage 3 to Stage 2 starting tonight at 10 p.m. Power outages will continue at that level until Friday evening,” said Eskom.

Eskom said it would continue adjusting the stage of load shedding depending on the level of breakdowns.

“We currently operate at 5,349 MW, but another 14,493 MW of capacity is unavailable due mainly to unplanned breakdowns.”

The electricity generator said power outages were implemented only as a last-resort measure to protect the national grid.
