President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to announce a new National Executive this evening in a televised address to the nation.
The announcement comes after his recent inauguration on June 19, following his election by the National Assembly on June 14.
The new National Executive will be the seventh Democratic Administration and will comprise a Government of National Unity, reflecting the diversity of political parties that emerged victorious in the national and provincial elections on May 29.
However, the Free Market Foundation (FMF) raised concerns about the size of the current Cabinet, which stands at 31 portfolios.
In a statement, the FMF proposed Cabinet be reduced to only 10 ministries to alleviate the burden on the economy.
According to the FMF, current size of the government is unsustainable and shrinking it should be a priority for the new administration.
David Ansara, CEO of the FMF, stated, “Instead of horse-trading over which party gets which portfolio, negotiators should instead focus on shrinking the bloated state.”
The FMF argues many current portfolios are discretionary and not mandated by the Constitution, costing taxpayers billions.
The FMF’s proposal, outlined in their Liberty First policy agenda, suggests consolidating, devolving, and scrapping certain portfolios to reduce the Cabinet to a more manageable size.
The organisation believes reform is possible without drastic measures such as a constitutional amendment.
As President Ramaphosa prepares to announce his new National Executive, the nation awaits to see if the FMF’s recommendations will be taken into consideration in the formation of the new government.
