Former State Security Minister faces corruption charges

In a significant legal development, former Minister of State Security is set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today, February 4, 2025, after being arrested earlier this morning on corruption allegations.

Reports indicate that between September and October 2017, the accused allegedly approached a member of the then Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises to orchestrate a meeting aimed at obstructing a session where the Eskom board was scheduled to provide accountability.

During this purported arrangement, he suggested that the committee meeting could not proceed unless the member disclosed a financial incentive, dubbed “gratification.”

Colonel Katlego Mogale, spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks), confirmed the accused, who has a background as a former member of the National Assembly and was previously sworn in as a Member of the Executive and Cabinet, served as Minister of State Security until May 28, 2024.

“He is no longer a Member of Parliament,” Mogale stated.

Colonel Mogale emphasised that all Members of Parliament are obligated to adhere to the Code of Ethics and other ethical standards mandated by the Constitution, as well as the Powers, Privileges, and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act of 2004, and the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act 12 of 2004 (PRECCA).

Lieutenant General (Dr/Adv.) SG Lebeya, the National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, affirmed the organisation’s commitment to its mission, stating, “The Directorate will continue to execute its mandate without fear, favour or prejudice.”

He commended the National Serious Corruption investigation team and urged the prosecution to ensure that justice is served for the citizens of South Africa.
