Former Department of Statistics South Africa, Director Phakane Moses Masukela, is facing serious charges of fraud and theft after it was revealed he held dual employment – also working for Ratlou Local Municipality.
The Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court has transferred his case to the Specialized Commercial Crimes Court, scheduled to sit at Molopo Regional Court on February 24, 2025.
Masukela, 43, was arrested and appeared before Mmabatho Magistrate Court where he faced two counts of fraud and two counts of theft, involving approximately R90,000.
It was exposed during court proceedings that Masukela failed to resign from his position at the Department of Statistics South Africa before accepting Senior Manager role at Ratlou Local Municipality, where he began working in May 2024.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) North West Division, Masukela unlawfully received salaries from both employers in May 2024, without disclosing his dual employment.
He allegedly submitted leave forms to each employer, claiming to be present at one job while working at the other.
This case highlights the serious consequences of fraud and the importance of transparency in the workplace.
The NPA has stated that they will vigorously pursue justice in this matter, and Masukela will have to answer for his actions in court.
