The Democratic Alliance (DA) has on Monday filed a complaint with the Environmental Management Inspectorate against Lephalale Local Municipality for neglecting to pick up garbage from Mahlakung informal settlement.
The DA councillor, Sybil Nieuwoudt has accused the municipality of endangering the health and safety of the residents.
According to Nieuwoudt, the DA reported these environmental concerns to community services, but there was no response.
“Mahlakung residents claim skip bins are not emptied regularly and that the garbage trucks don’t even come once a month to pick up the garbage,” Nieuwoudt said.
She said Mahlakung is very close to Ellisras Provincial Hospital and the administration has repeatedly complained not only about the unbearable smell but also about garbage disposal.
“It is intolerable that the dignity of the people in Mahlakung has been jeopardized and the DA has committed itself to ensuring environmental protection and to complying with paragraph 24 of the constitution, which guarantees that everyone has the right to a healthy and safe environment, is preserved …” she added.
According to Nieuwoudt, the DA would not be satisfied if the municipality did not fulfill its responsibilities, causing pollution, ignoring to remove garbage near where people live.
