Free State Nyaope peddling ring busted in police sting

The Welkom Public Order Police Unit conducted a successful operation in the Eastern Free State, arresting five suspects in Qwaqwa and Harrismith on allegations of drug peddling.

The police also seized an unlicensed firearm that had been reported stolen in Harrismith earlier this year.

Free State police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, noted that the arrest was the result of a tip-off on Tuesday, which revealed that a woman was distributing drugs in the area.

The police located the woman near Mandela Scrapyard, who attempted to evade them, but managed to arrest her in possession of 80 Nyaope sachets.

According Mophiring, a silver 9mm pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition was also discovered.

The further investigation by the team led them to Harrismith, where four suspects were arrested in possession of a total of 326 Nyaope sachets.

All suspects, aged between 25 and 35, have been charged and are expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate Court on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit was patrolling in Ezenzeleni near Warden when they encountered a suspicious man.

He attempted to flee, but was eventually caught with five unlicensed rounds of ammunition.

The 26-year-old suspect has been charged and is due to appear before the Warden Magistrate Court on Thursday.
